America250 Knowing the West

Girl Talk: Parent and Daughter Puberty Workshop
at Alice Aycock Poe Center for Health Education, East Raleigh
Girl Talk is an in person educational workshop designed for 4th through 7th grade girls and their parents or trusted adult guardians. The program provides a supportive environment to discuss the physical, social, and emotional changes associated with adolescent growth and puberty. This event helps families navigate these transitions with confidence and open communication.
Participants will explore essential topics including the reproductive system, the menstrual cycle, and feminine hygiene through engaging activities and expert guidance. Poe educators will utilize 3D exhibits and facilitate candid discussions to make complex health topics accessible and easy to understand. This hands on approach ensures that both daughters and adults feel informed and empowered by the end of the session.
This workshop is specifically intended for pairs of girls and their caregivers. Please note that one ticket covers one adult and daughter pair, with add on options available for additional children. Knifemaking Intro: One-Day Workshop
at ShopSpace, Midtown Raleigh
This one-day intensive workshop provides a comprehensive introduction to knife making through the stock removal method. Participants will learn the fundamentals of blade fabrication by crafting their own high-carbon steel knife from start to finish at ShopSpace.
During the morning session, you will design your blade, cut the shape from steel, grind the bevels, and select handle materials. You will also participate in the heat-treating process to harden the metal. The afternoon focuses on finalizing the blade geometry, attaching the handle, and surface finishing to ensure your project is ready for use. All necessary tools and materials are provided by ShopSpace instructors.
This course is designed for individuals who have already completed the Fabrication Intro or Forging Intro classes. Due to the fast-paced nature of the curriculum, we recommend arriving with a simple design concept to maximize your hands-on time. This is an excellent opportunity to gain practical experience with professional shop equipment while completing a functional tool.
