North Carolina State Capitol

This was my first time being in the state capital building since childhood. It seems so much bigger back than ha ha! Wonderful staff, they have postcards, lapel pins, and other fun little things that you can buy. I was here for a play by Legacy Heirs production part of the America 250 celebration. Seeing Sonny Kelly perform in the state Capitol building was a phenomenal experience. I truly enjoyed the play in the ambience of the state capital even though all business is now conducted at the general assembly. It was still really cool to be hearing historic facts and information in the place where those laws and bills would’ve been introduced and passed. So cool to experience history shout out to all the hard-working people that maintain this property. It is truly a special place.

Very small Capitol but a fun one to check off. You can really wander where you want! Best parts are the neat statue of Washington and the cool library upstairs. I recommend wandering down to the current legislative building afterwards

A beautiful and historic gem in the heart of Raleigh

Visiting the North Carolina State Capitol was an unexpectedly enriching experience. Nestled in the center of downtown Raleigh, this historic building offers a perfect blend of architecture, history, and calm green space that feels like a step back in time.

The building itself is absolutely stunning — a beautifully preserved example of Greek Revival architecture. The stonework, tall columns, and symmetrical design are impressive from the outside, but it’s the interior that really tells the story. Walking through the Capitol, you get a real sense of North Carolina’s political history. The rooms are restored with incredible attention to detail, and the displays throughout give meaningful context to the state’s past.

What I appreciated most was how accessible and peaceful the entire space felt. The staff and guides were welcoming and informative without being overbearing. You’re free to explore at your own pace, which makes it easy to truly soak in the atmosphere.

Outside, the grounds are perfect for a relaxing walk or a quiet moment. Statues, trees, and benches surround the Capitol, creating a park-like environment right in the middle of the city.

This place is not just for history buffs — it’s for anyone who enjoys learning, beautiful buildings, or just a quiet spot to appreciate something meaningful. Whether you’re a tourist or a local, a visit to the North Carolina State Capitol is absolutely worth your time. It’s one of Raleigh’s must-see landmarks.

Beautiful historic building with well kept grounds. Downtown core around it is suffering from urban blight and lack of investment. Hopefully it can turn a corner with redevelopment. Great old buildings with lots of potential.

Free admission! This place is great for history enthusiast and seeking to take a glimpse into history. It doesn't take very long to go through the building and outdoor self guided tour but definitely worth the visit.

On the particular day we went they had a Christmas choir performing and it made the visit extra special. So I recommend looking up if there's any events going on inside or around the building to make a whole day of it.

Staff was polite & welcoming! Restrooms were clean.
