JC Raulston Arboretum

We stopped at the arboretum on a spring road trip and I'm so glad we did. The flowers, bushes and trees were stunning as they were beginning to grow and bloom. We got so many amazing photos and the walk was so pleasurable and the scents of some of the flowers, like the Korean Spice Viburnum were intoxicating!!! A must stop during spring and they didn't charge for admission.

As a family and high school senior photographer in Raleigh, J.C. Raulston Arboretum is one of my go-to locations for its incredible variety. From vibrant blooms and lush greenery to structured garden paths and unique architectural features, there’s always something beautiful to work with—no matter the season.

Every session here feels different, which makes it such a fun and creative space for portraits. It’s a true gem for anyone looking for a location that offers both charm and versatility.

Beautiful arboretum and garden place. There are some areas still under construction like the Japanese theme garden. They have a small visitor center with clean restrooms. Also, they have plants for sale at the entrance.

This well-established garden has a large variety of plants and a large section devoted to experimental plant hybrids. The terrain is fairly even and easily walkable. It is so lovely, There is an indoor rentable facility which is also occasionally rented out to wedding parties.
On-site parking can be crowded, but nearby street parking is an option. A small but pleasant picnic area is available near the back of the park. You can bring your lunch and relax for a while. The only detraction from the park comes from the noise of distant traffic and an occasional train.

As a Raleigh wedding photographer, I love the JC Raulston Arboretum! I recently photographed a wedding ceremony here, and it was absolutely stunning during the spring with all of the flowers in bloom! There are so many beautiful places to take photos after the ceremony, and I believe there are also multiple places that you can choose from to host your ceremony within the space.
