Frederick Douglass Community Reading
Join us at the historic Stagville State Historic Site for a poignant and powerful community reading of Frederick Douglass famous speech, What to the Slave is the Fourth of July. This special event invites participants to gather at the historic slave quarters at Horton Grove to reflect on the legacy of freedom and the complex history of our nation. Commemorating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, this gathering encourages us to engage with one of the most significant abolitionist texts in United States history.
This is a fully participatory event, and we welcome you to sign up as a volunteer reader upon arrival to help bring this historic address to life. Please remember to bring a chair or blanket to enjoy the outdoors comfortably. Following the reading, guests are encouraged to explore the original slave quarters and the Great Barn. This educational experience is entirely free and open to all members of the community. We look forward to seeing you there to honor this vital piece of our shared history through reflection and collective voice.
