Derek Gripper: Music From The Strings Of Mali

Derek Gripper presents a unique concert performance showcasing the intricate sounds of West African music translated for a solo six-string guitar. This event explores the complex rhythms of the Malian kora, demonstrating how traditional African melodies integrate with classical guitar techniques to create a rich and immersive listening experience.

Attendees will experience a deep dive into kumbengo, the repetitive and cyclical musical structures central to the West African tradition. Gripper performs transcriptions of works by legendary kora virtuoso Toumani Diabaté, reimagining them through his own technical mastery. The performance balances precise classical arrangement with spontaneous improvisation, shifting the music from a formal recital setting into a living, creative dialogue. This program highlights the profound range of the acoustic guitar while honoring the cultural heritage of Mali.

This concert is designed for music enthusiasts, guitar players, and fans of world music who appreciate technical innovation and cultural fusion.
