A Vision That Helped Shape Downtown Raleigh

The idea for Artspace began in 1980, when community leaders and the Raleigh Arts Commission envisioned a vibrant “cultural corridor” in downtown Raleigh. At the time, much of the area - including City Market - was underdeveloped.

With support from city leaders like Mayor Smedes York, a long-abandoned building was transformed into a creative hub. After years of renovation led by Clearscapes Architecture, Artspace officially opened in November 1986.

That vision helped spark downtown Raleigh's revitalization - and Artspace remains a key part of that story today.

One of the most unique aspects of Artspace is its open studio environment. More than 30 artists work on-site, creating everything from paintings and sculpture to textiles and mixed media.

Visitors are encouraged to step inside studios, ask questions, and learn directly from artists - a rare opportunity that makes art feel approachable and personal.

Artspace also supports emerging artists through residency programs and subsidized studio space, helping creatives build sustainable careers in Raleigh.

Exhibitions, First Friday & Community Events

Artspace features rotating exhibitions throughout the year, showcasing both local and national artists. With multiple gallery spaces, there's always something new to explore.

It's also a cornerstone of Raleigh's popular First Friday events, drawing crowds downtown each month for art, music, and community connection.

In addition to exhibitions, Artspace hosts free events, live demonstrations, and interactive experiences that invite visitors to engage with art in meaningful ways.
