DIY Spectroscope: Seeing the Hidden Colors of Light

Parents are requested to remain nearby during the workshop so they can be reached if needed. There are several shops to explore at Cecy’s, as well as nearby cafés for coffee.

Join Wildflower Data and Learning for a hands-on workshop where children explore the science of light through building their own working spectroscope. Participants will learn how different light sources—such as sunlight, bulbs, and flames—contain unique “barcode” patterns, and will observe these spectra firsthand using a device they construct themselves.

This session is designed to introduce core scientific concepts in an accessible, tactile format, emphasizing observation, pattern recognition, and curiosity-driven inquiry.

Location: Cecy's Gallery & Studios, 417 Foster St, Durham, NC 27701, United States

Ages: 6–12
